As the new decade dawns I want to extend a warm thank you to all of members. The 2010's brought change to the Oakley Library and the Friends of the Oakley Library tirelessly supported all events and programs that the Library provided. The 2020's will see our library grow and expand just as Oakley grows and expands and Friends will be there to provide the support that is needed. We hope to see all of our Friends at the Library!
As 2019 draws to a close, I find myself looking back at all of the programs that were held at the Library this year. For those who are not aware, Friends of the Oakley Library funds all programming that occurs at the Oakley Library and also purchases all craft supplies, various program supplies and even cleaning supplies. From Summer Reading to Beading with Donna, all programming is made possible through your generous support of the Friends of the Oakley Library.Read more
This season, Friends of the Oakley Library has been fortunate to receive some substantial donations to keep our programming thriving! One donor that deserves special recognition is Antioch Brentwood Pediatric Dentistry! We want to extend a huge thank you to them and to all of our generous donors. Without your support our programming would not be possible. We hope that everyone has a safe and wonderful holiday season!
Join us as we kick off the Holiday Season at the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting in downtown Oakley! On November 12, the Oakley City Council approved a resolution that would explore the possibility of developing a new Library in Oakley!
The Oakley City Council has approved $25,000 to look at the possibility of converting the old sheriff's station in to a Library. The building is located at 200 O'Hara Ave and has been vacant since the sheriff's department moved to Brentwood earlier this year. Per a staff report, the building itself has a number of code related concerns and is too small to function as a Library. The report would explore the possibility of tearing down the current structure and rebuilding a larger structure.
The Oakley Library is currently resides in 3,000 square feet of the Freedom High School Library. The Library was moved to the High School in 1999 what was to be a period of 5 years so that the city could build a Library. Unfortunately, it has been 20 years and the library is still in the same space. We will be addressing this development at our next Friend's meeting on 11/21/2019. We hope to see everyone there!
For the past 17 years, Howl La La Boo has been a mainstay program of the Oakley Library that has been solely funded by the Friends of the Oakley Library.
This year, we were able to provide three craft stations, and four activity stations. We were especially fortune to have a great group of volunteers who were able to assist in the lengthy prep for Howl La La Boo and who volunteered their time for the event.
Our hard work has paid off and thanks to the financial support of the friends, in conjunction with the group of volunteers we were able to pull off one of our most successful Howl La La Boo's for the Oakley Library! We were fortunate to have over 117 people attend, which was double our number of our attendees last year! All in all, a resounding success for the Library and the Friends of the Oakley Library.
